Follow in Hemingway’s footsteps over the western game corridor of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Enjoy the diverse scenery and flora and fauna, from the montane forest to the western savannah, where African animals roam freely as they have for thousands of years. This safari is designed for experienced riders and offers breathtaking views, exhilarating canters and close contact with wildlife such as elephant, zebra, eland, wildebeest – to name but a few.
Enjoy the 24 hour bush-experience, lighted by lanterns, listening to animal voices next to the camp fire…
Arrival at "Out-of-Africa"
You will either be collected from Kilimanjaro International Airport or, in case you have arrived earlier we will collect you from your hotel in Moshi. Thereafter you will be transferred to West Kilimanjaro. Your guide will meet you on a treehouse overviewing a waterhole – the most enjoyable entertainment with all sorts of wild animals coming, drinking and splashing in the muddy water. Lunch will be served and there is some time to relax before you meet your horses and set off on an evening ride.
The scenery of Africa as known from films… Savannah dotted with umbrella acacia trees, with giraffe, zebra and other wildlife roaming freely. We will arrive at a place called “Mgunga”, which is the Kisw name for Acacia trees. Our private mobile camp for the next two nights is waiting for you and our ever-friendly crew will make sure your stay will be a comfortable one. Spacious tents are equipped with comfortable beds and linen and en suite WC, shower and wash basin which the crew will fill up with steaming hot water every night.
We will wake up early and start for a long ride ride in this wilderness area, tracking amongst others elephant, zebra, wildebeest and many antelope (Elands, Thomson, Grant and Impala), occasionally buffalo. A late lunch will await us, prepared on a beautiful site with stunning scenery.
The view over rolling grass fields and bush, with Mt. Meru at one side, Mt. Kilimanjaro behind you and the mountains Longido and Namanga to the other side will make you feel that this is the place where you’d like to stay…
After a break we will depart with the 4×4 vehicle for an interesting journey into another world: to the homestad of a Masai family. Get to know the cheerful women and children and learn about their daily life. It will be dark when will return to camp, for sure we will meet some nocturnal animals usually not seen during the day.
More game... on the ride towards Mt. Kilimanjaro
Another long morning ride for spotting game along the western boundary of the reserve. In addition to the ever-present antelopes, zebras and gazelles, we’ll keep an eye out for giraffes, ostriches, warthogs and maybe a cheetah. What we really hope for though, is the chance for a peaceful meeting with a herd of magnificent African elephants and we will explore the area of “Tembobridge” to seek out herds in between the euphorbia forest. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
Later we continue our way southeast passing the plains between Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. See herd animals watching the horses with interest, have a canter with zebra and eland, then we stop en route for a picnic lunch.
Later afternoon we meet the vehicle and transport horses and guests back to Makoa Farm. Enjoy the view of Mt. Kilimanjaro while sitting on the veranda with a sunset drink.
Makoa-Farm and Departure
After a relaxed breakfast there may be enough time to have a look around our farm and learn more about our educational projects. Maybe you like to join our rescue-monkey troop on a bush walk. Or, visit the small rescue station with an ever-changing number of animals, which are here because they were found orphaned, injured or have unwillingly lost their habitat. Some will stay, often due to injuries, and will be ambassadors for education of local school kids, teaching them about environment and conservation.
Alternatively you may decide to take another ride along the boundaries of Makoa-Farm or visit Moshi for some souvenier shopping, a small town right at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
There will be a day room available for you, so you can shower and relax before your departure. This is where your safari comes to an end and you will feel it difficult to leave new friends and horses so plans for the next trip evolve! Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
