Makoa-Farm – cozy farm accommodation on the Foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Makoa-Farm, our base, is located in Northern Tanzania, south of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

The farm is near Kilimanjaro’s Machame Gate with access to the spectacular rainforest on the mountain’s lower slopes. The area is home to the Chagga, people whose small villages and coffee farms dot the hillsides. On the plains to the south, Masai graze their cattle. The area is rich in diversity.

The farmland is surrounded by the Makoa and Kikafu river valleys with their beautiful gallery forest, picturesque villages and local markets can be visited in the surrounding area – usually accompanied by the fantastic view of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Enjoy a stay in one of our cosy guesthouses and the ambience of an estate founded in 1901 with the original colonial-style farmhouse on a former coffee plantation.
The farm and its surroundings are also ideal for short hikes, bird watching, animal and nature exploring e.g. along the river valleys. We are also happy to plan and organize longer hikes and day excursions by car for you.
Whilst staying on Makoa-Farm you will enjoy comfortable accommodation and excellent, always freshly prepared food.

At Makoa Farm, a veterinary practice operates, providing treatment for a variety of domestic animals who reside here temporarily or permanently. Additionally, we are committed to environmental, nature, and animal conservation efforts, collaborating closely with Tanzanian rangers on wildlife rescue missions.
